Talking About Touch in Everyday Life

The terms Safe Touch, Unsafe Touch, Private Parts, and Reporting should and can easily become part of your family’s everyday vocabulary. We call these words KidSafe Key Concepts.

Example: You are at home and your child falls and gets hurt. Another child —a sibling or friend—approaches, gently touches the child, and asks if they are okay. You can say to the child who is being touched, “How did it feel when Jan touched you on the shoulder?” Help them put words to it: nice, happy, comfortable. Ask, “Was that a Safe Touch or an Unsafe Touch for you?” Safe touch. Commend the other child for their positive response.

Example: Children are in the classroom or playroom. While arguing over a toy they are playing with, one child reaches out and hits the other. Ask the hitter, “Was that a Safe or Unsafe Touch? How else could you have handled this situation?” Be prepared with appropriate consequences for the hitter to send the message that problems aren’t solved with unsafe touches.
